One for the Road

by Helen Mort and Stuart Maconie (ed.)

Price: £10

Funny, moving, tender, tipsy - the ideal poetic pub-crawl.

Join some of the UK’s best contemporary poets on an ideal pub crawl, guided by Stuart Maconie and Helen Mort

This anthology will showcase a variety of new writing celebrating the British pub and everything that happens there: glass-half-full poems, early doors and last orders poems, it’s-your-round-next poems, poems so urgent they had to be scribbled on beer mats.

As well as a poem, each writer featured in the book will also share their favourite pub with you – real or imagined, thriving or long-since shut. Stuart Maconie and Helen Mort will ferry you on your way with short prose pieces inspired by the theme – a literary bar-hop.

Now and again a book arrives that is so at ease with itself, it’s as if it has always existed. Like the best pubs, this book keeps welcoming the reader back, varied and consistent in its voices, always friendly. Congratulations to smith|doorstop for presenting One for the Road with their usual simple elegance. In Mort’s introduction, she says: ‘I’ve come to believe that a poem is like a dram of single malt whisky – concentrated, mind-altering, leaving a sweet sting in the mouth.’ She goes on to hope we get ‘pleasantly drunk’ on this book.– Rosie Johnston, The London Grip
