Julie Mellor lives near Sheffield and holds a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University. Her first pamphlet, Breathing Through Our Bones, was a winner of the Poetry Business Pamphlet Competition and was published by smith|doorstop in 2012. She blogs at https://juliemellorpoetsite.wordpress.com

[This] pamphlet is full of a restless curiosity and a desire to understand the complexity and strangeness of the world around us. Perspective is important in these poems – [Mellor] moves with deftness and originality from the inside of a fly’s head to the Sheffield skyline, from a teenage brush with death to the morning commute, taking the reader with her in her quest to examine life from surprising and unexpected angles.

– Kim Moore

The poems ... take us to places where ‘the road stops at the rim of the world’, points where we can stop and observe the strange weather of other people’s lives. This writing is alert and alive, sensitive to different visions of past and present – the vast landscapes
seen by a fly, Edwardians relishing electricity, a bat embryo ‘dissected with light’. It gives us the heart ‘raw as lambs’ liver’.

– Helen Mort
