Heroes

£5.00

In ‘Heroes’, The Spice Girls’, Humphry Davy, and Malala tackle our attitudes to heroism together with the Unknown Soldier, the-man-who-discovered-Antarctica , and more. This limited edition pamphlet considers heroes past and present, and always finds the lesser-known story. Heroes contains ten poems by Christy Ducker, and each poem is illustrated with an original lino cut by the artist Emma Holliday.

Heroes comes from the Arts Council-funded writing project, ‘North East Heroes’ – Christy Ducker has mined Victorian fan mail and heroes’ diaries from the Northumberland Archives, to spark new creative work. She has also invited young people into the archive to engage with poetry their sense of history and their sense of self. The project will culminate in a creative writing website which launches in June 2016.

Christy Ducker is a poet and tutor. Her first full length collection, ‘Skipper’ (2015) includes work commended by the Forward Prize judges. Skipper is described by Jackie Kay as ‘deft and tough’, and by D. Nurkse as ‘important work by a powerful poet’. Christy pamphlet, ‘Armour’ (2011) was a PBS Pamphlet Choice. Christy is currently Artist in Residence with York University’s Centre for Immunology, and director of the North East Heroes writing project. In 2015, she completed a PhD at Newcastle University.

Emma Holiday lives in the North East and paints throughout the UK. Working predominately in acrylics, her paintings are vibrant and expressive, capturing the vitality of a moment in time. She also works in printmaking and illustration, making small editions and specialised projects. Emma and her work have been featured in Artists and Illustrator, Living North, The Crack, Culture Mag, The Journal and other publications. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally and at present she is showing in the North East and in Norfolk. Her paintings are in many private and public collections, including Newcastle upon Tyne University and The House of Lords.
