Edward Thomas did not write his first poem until 1914, when he was 36. By the time he was killed in action at Arras on April 9th 1917, less than two and a half years later, he had written 142 poems. Ted Hughes acknowledged Thomas as ‘the father of us all’, but he is certainly not only a poets’ poet. The English Review’s judgement in 1918 on his posthumous Last Poems that the work ‘will be treasured by posterity’ has proved true.

Michael Laskey’s own poetry has been shortlisted for the T S Eliot Prize and has twice been a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. His New and Selected Poems, The Man Alone, was published in 2008. Michael founded the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival and edited 50 issues of Smiths Knoll and its series of pamphlet publications. He lives in Suffolk.
