Michael McCarthy

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Irish poet Michael McCarthy.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Irish poet Michael McCarthy. Fr Michael grew up on a farm in West Cork. His first poetry collection Birds’ Nests and Other Poems won the Patrick Kavanagh Award, while his book At the Races was the outright winner of the 2008 Book & Pamphlet Competition, judged by Michael Longley.  His 2016 collection The Healing Station was chosen by Hilary Mantell as a Book of the Year in The Guardian

He worked as a priest in North Yorkshire. His books for children have been translated into seventeen languages.

Fr Michael had completed a new poetry collection, The Bright Room, which will be published in October, and a prose memoir, which will appear next year.  Fr Michael was an outstanding storyteller in verse and one of the wisest of poets.  He will be greatly missed by many people.
