Catherine Benson spent most of her childhood in Scotland and now lives in Bradford. When she left teaching she began illustrating and writing. She has poems for children in many anthologies.Under the name Cathy Benson she has illustrated two recent children's books: To Catch and Elephant and Omba Bolomba (written by Gerard Benson and published by Smith/Doorstop Books).

This is her first adult collection.

The Scythe

They give me room in this dark shed, a corner of my own.

Spiders avoid me, mice do not leap me.

My blade teases the flower pots and the broom.

In his hands I am a wicked smile in the grass.

I leer at the innocent daisy, the bold dandelion.

I taste the green salt of a grass sea.

My rhythm is his rhythm.

In my hands he becomes Father Time.
