Elspeth Smith

Elspeth Smith

Elspeth Smith was born in Ceylon in 1928 to British parents. She was sent to school in Edinburgh and then to St. Leonards-on-Sea. Trained as a health visitor, she has lived and worked in Huddersfield for forty years. In this time she has developed a unique style of writing and observation. It’s no coincidence that her favourite author is Barbara Pym.

She says: ‘The Poetry Business Saturday Workshop is one of my greatest delights.’

Reviews

'Throughout this collection the texts are stark and accessible, but possess a more deep-rooted strength than is at first apparent. The poems are slight but demand rereading—a sign of considerable craftsmanship.' — James Midgley, Sphinx
